Glaxo to pay up to 380 jobs in research
A pharmaceutical giant is to close one of its research facilities in Essex, with the loss of about 380 jobs. A third of the workforce is to become redundant after the completion of projects to relieve pain, anxiety and depression drugs late at GlaxoSmithKline in Harlow. The company, which announced a 12% increase in profits last week, said the plant was left open. A consultation was launched, but new research projects would be started, said a spokesman. The company also said it would bring a continuation of the restructuring of £ 500 million savings by 2012, but “trying to get jobs,” as far as possible. The company announced an increase of 12% of annual profit on 4 February, but has also stressed the need to reduce costs. Profit before tax for the year 2009 came to 8 pounds 73bn ($ 13. 81bn), compared to 7 pounds 78bn in 2008.
